Pierre Balmain opened his label in Paris in 1945. Before that he worked for Edward Molyneux and then for Lucien Lelong. After the war he led the style known as Jolie Madame. He worked with the perfumer Germaine Cellier, and their scents included Vent Vert in 1947 and Jolie Madame in 1953. He died in 1982. Mayhoola, an investment firm from Qatar, bought the label in 2016. Olivier Rousteing was creative director from 2011 to 2025, a run of 14 years. In November 2025 Balmain named Antonin Tron, founder of the label Atlein, as creative director. He showed his first Balmain collection in Paris in March 2026.
