Gallery Dept. started in Los Angeles in 2017. Its founder, Josué Thomas, is the child of two artists and worked at Ralph Lauren in his twenties. In 2016 he made his first sale, a hand sewn denim poncho, to Johnny Depp's stylist. The early pieces were vintage clothes he reworked by hand, with paint splatters, brushstrokes, patches and tie dye. The label became known for paint splattered T shirts and hand finished flared jeans. Its LA Flare jeans came out in 2017, when most men's jeans were skinny. In 2021 it made a collection with Lanvin. Thomas has also worked as a DJ, musician, painter, furniture designer and photographer.
