Kapital started in 1985 in Kojima, the part of Okayama known as Japan's denim capital, which gave the label its name. Founder Toshikiyo Hirata came across mid century American denim while teaching karate in the United States. Back home he opened a denim factory in 1984, a year before the label, to make denim of the same quality. His son Kiro joined in 2002 to work on design and marketing. The label is known for sashiko stitching, boro patchwork, quilting and mending. Century Denim carries indigo sashiko stitching all over. The Ring Coat crosses an M65 field jacket with a peacoat. Toshikiyo died in 2024. In January 2025 Kapital premiered a runway show online, and Kiro called it a farewell to his father.
