Mario Prada and his brother Martino opened Fratelli Prada, a leather goods shop in Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, in 1913. Mario's granddaughter Miuccia Prada joined in 1970 and took over in 1978. She met Patrizio Bertelli, later her husband, in 1977, and the two began working together. Her first backpacks and totes came out in 1979. They were cut from a tough black nylon her grandfather had used to cover steamer trunks. Miu Miu, named after her family nickname, launched in 1993. In 2011 Prada listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In 2020 Raf Simons joined Miuccia Prada as joint creative director, with equal responsibilities. In December 2025 the Prada Group completed its purchase of Versace.
