retaW started in Tokyo in 2009, and Hiroshi Fujiwara was one of its two founders. The name is the word water spelled backwards. The idea is to make scent part of everyday life, the way water is. It makes scent for the body, the home and the car, from body cream and candles to room tags and car tags. Its first store opened in Harajuku in September 2016, and its first liquid perfume followed that December. A second store opened in Nagoya in 2017. Some scents take their names from music. Natural Mystic is named after the Bob Marley and the Wailers song, and Allen, a lily scent, refers to the British singer Lily Allen.
