Hermès began in Paris in 1837, when Thierry Hermès opened a workshop making equipment for horses. The saddle stitch from that work later moved onto luggage. The first leather handbags came in 1922. The first silk scarf, the carré, came out in 1937. The Kelly bag is named after Grace Kelly. A 1956 photo of her carrying it ran in Life magazine. The Birkin followed in 1984. On a Paris to London flight, Jane Birkin had complained about her bag to the man beside her, who ran Hermès. In October 2025 Hermès named Grace Wales Bonner creative director of men's ready to wear. She follows Véronique Nichanian, who led menswear for 37 years and showed her last collection in January 2026. Wales Bonner's first show is due in January 2027.
