Benedikt Taschen started Taschen in 1980 as a comic book shop in Cologne, Germany. It grew into a publisher of large format illustrated books on art, architecture, design, fashion, film, photography and pop culture. The Basic Art series began in 1985 with a monograph on Salvador Dalí and now runs to more than 120 titles in up to 30 languages. In 1999 Helmut Newton's SUMO, signed and limited to 10,000 copies, started Taschen's oversized Collector's Editions. It led to GOAT, a tribute to Muhammad Ali. Benedikt and his daughter Marlene have led the publisher together since 2017, and Marlene now runs its daily operations from Milan.
