ASICS for men
ASICS traces back to 1949, when Kihachiro Onitsuka set up Onitsuka Shokai in Kobe, Japan. His first shoe, released in 1950, was for basketball. In 1951 the suction cups of an octopus inspired a sole that helped players stop and start. In 1977 his company merged with GTO and Jelenk to form ASICS Corporation. The name takes the first letters of the Latin anima sana in corpore sano, a sound mind in a sound body. In 1986 it released its first shoe with GEL, a silicone cushioning material. Its Kayano running line followed in 1993, named after its designer, Toshikazu Kayano. In 2002 ASICS brought back the Onitsuka Tiger name, reissuing shoes such as the Mexico 66. Its global headquarters is still in Kobe.
