Gucci began in Florence in 1921, when Guccio Gucci opened a shop selling imported leather luggage. He had earlier worked as a bellhop at the Savoy Hotel in London, handling the bags of wealthy guests. In 1947 the label launched the Bamboo bag. Its bamboo handles were a response to material shortages after the war. The Horsebit loafer followed in 1953, the year Gucci opened its first store in New York. The green and red web stripe comes from the canvas girth strap on a horse saddle. Gucci has been part of Kering since 1999. Demna became its artistic director in 2025. In September 2026 he showed the label's spring summer 2027 collection at Milan Fashion Week.
